Abstract:
It’s been suggested the Outer Banks dialect was a remnant of Elizabethan age colonial residency. Another unique aspect of Banker speech was common words and phrases. Among the possibly known by other Coastal Plain residents: dingbattin’. Others possibly known by people outside of NC include grub. Others like peelin’ the green may be known only to natives.

Abstract:
What TJ Evans shared was evidence of the Banks’ long personal history and occasional weavings into the greater tapestry of American history. His stories highlighting the history of Cape Hatteras Island, its lighthouse, and the Banks’ experiences with hurricanes. As for involvement with historical events of greater reported significance, noted was the only direct contact made with the sinking Titanic, from the Cape Hatteras Wireless Station.

Abstract:
An aspect making a people unique are expressions and descriptions that reveal their perception. This collection represented nautical lifeways that defined cardinal cultural values of the area and served as a memory for values of generations past. Phrases perhaps unique to the Banks included atter-a-while and foine; ones more characteristic of time period included Hessian and sparkin’.

Abstract:
If asked to identify visionaries for flight, one might consider the Wright Brothers. Someone else with maven status for advocating airplanes, but perhaps not so well known was General Billy Mitchell. Largely unpopular during his time, Mitchell’s assertion of combining aircraft and naval operations gradually gained support through the efforts of the then Secretary of the Navy, Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Abstract:
General Billy Mitchell’s efforts to establish airplanes in naval operations included building an airstrip at Cape Hatteras. The first mission, taking place during the summer of 1923, was proving sinking battleships possible. Ironically, for many people living in the area, it was regarded as much entertainment as witnessing an historic event.

A continuation of the series begun in Sea Chest’s first edition, this collection of journal entries mostly chronicled the meteorological conditions between September 1874-July 1879. Wedged between daily reports of barometric pressure were occasional ones of ships setting sail and their minor damages. Rare reports were of loss of life from shipwrecks and drownings.

WWII reached Hatteras Island courtesy of spies, as accompanied photos of the houses they stayed in attested. Among spy reports famous enough for film was of a man many Islanders may have never assumed could be among the enemy. Hans Hoff, the spy whose electrocution was filmed, had lived with one of the local families one summer in the early 1930s.

Mrs. J.D. Barnett recounted the WWI sinking of the Diamond Shoals lightship by German submarines, an event reported in the local newspaper. As for the source of the entire story, that her father in law, captain of the sunken lightship.

The Hatteras Island national wildlife refuge created in 1938 was designed as wintering grounds for greater snow geese. However, three hundred species have called it temporary home, including muskrats and snakes. Reasons for its conduciveness as a bird refuge were the hunting ban and plenteous food such as salt marsh cordgrass. As for native Islanders, many were not at home with the refuge grounds becoming unwelcome for human habitation.

Abstract:
The grave of Hezekiah Quidley proved his earthly life was over. Reports about mysterious sounds in the woods suggested his love for fiddle playing lived on. Stories about a woman appearing to her former boyfriend after her death also proved things going bump in the night were sometimes restless spirits.

Abstract:
The life of Archie Scarborough included a skill for square knot making. Much of the interview pivoted around this talent, what he also called macramé making. Traveling the conversation path included life landmarks such as contenting with the Park Service and helping to construct Wimble Shoals Lighthouse and a railroad in Kitty Hawk.

This interview revealed what Hatteras Island was like when it was what Luther Hooper Sr. called a hunter’s paradise. For him, what made Hatteras Island paradisiacal for hunters were the abundance of hunting lodges and parties, adventures in reef hunting and skiff sailing.

The Sea Chest staff continued the Weather Station’s briny borne adventures in these entries, chronicled between March-June 1876. Wedged between the ordinary reports of barometric pressure was the extraordinary three week disappearance of Private Hanes. To illustrate the difference between charting the weather during the 19th century and current methods, included were pictures of modern weather forecasting equipment.
