Abstract:
Remembrance of rescue from a Coast Guard boat overtaken by a hurricane was spurred by the death of Lt. Bernice Ramon Ballance. He, as much as the event, was a reminder that heroes, found during war and peace, can be located on a rescuing sea plane as much as capsized cutter. Abstract:
The former Maude Miller had an eventful career history. She was first a schoolteacher at what was called a "pay school" by Hatteras Island residents. She became the county welfare supervisor during the 1930s, gaining experience with the Depression’s effects on the Island. As a postmistress, she was second generation employee (her father served during the 1800s). During World War II, she was a Coastal Observer, with the Navy issuing a service certificate. Of her late husband, Estus Preston White, she noted their common work background in education, with his work on the Board. His local administrative roles included chairman of Methodist Sunday School and electric plant, as well as county administrative work as a commissioner.

Touted as the first four-masted schooner to wreck on the Outer Banks, the George A. Kohler, was destroyed not by the hurricane that had washed it ashore, but the second buyer of its remains. Its value at that time could be measured in the dollars exchanged for its scrap iron and steel. Its present and intrinsic value can be seen in speculations of a shipwreck eight miles from Avon being the sunken schooner.

Between the Coast Guard, naval yard, and commercial fisheries work of many kinds, Mr. Robert Watson Gray had gained almost a lifetime of maritime experience. After retirement, with much of his days taken up by fishing, he showed how the lure of the open sea still reeled him in.

Glimpses of the past were perhaps seen most clearly in this collection of photos. One was a reminder of when the ferry was the only source of transport for humans and cargo. Others were reminders of businesses long since gone out of business, as well as buildings still standing. Most the photos, though, attested the importance of waterways around the Island, whether the creek familiarly known as the “Slash,” Core Sound, or Atlantic Ocean.

The base known familiarly as Cherry Point has followed a longstanding military tradition for North Carolina, with Marines on coastal duty since 1777. Cherry Point’s history included its founding, attributed to the Quantico, Virginia base being deemed inadequate. Also noted in its profile: base name’s source; originally designated location; role in World War II; inclusion of female Marines; and celebrity pilots such as Tyrone Power.
