T.W. Garner Food Company was founded by Thad W. Garner in Winston-Salem in 1929. Sauces, jams, jellies, and preserves make up its line of twenty-nine products. Texas Pete hot sauce is probably the best-known one.

Abstract:
The Chatham Manufacturing Company was founded in Elkin in Surry County in 1877. Since then the company has earned a reputation for blankets, upholstery material, apparel cloth, and yarns used in other textile plants. Chatham employs around 3,500; many have fathers and grandfathers who worked for the company.

Swift & Company opened its first meat packing company in Wilson in 1959. Since then the workforce has increased from an initial 250 to about 350. The plant serves North Carolina and parts of South Carolina and Virginia. Over 1,200 head of mixed livestock are processed daily.

The Pomona Terra-Cotta Company of Greensboro is among the nation's largest producers of vitrified clay sewer pipe and building products. Founded in 1886, the parent company plant and headquarters still occupy the same site upon which the firm was established.

Blue Bell Inc, with headquarters and manufacturing plants in Greensboro, and others plants in Stokesdale and Lenoir, as well as plants in seven other states, ranks as one of the leading garment producers in the country. James Spencer Love came to North Carolina seeking a job in 1919. Four years later he owned the Gastonia Mill and began a textile empire that at his death on January 20, 1962, included 147 plants in eighteen states and seven foreign countries. Around half of the plants and employees are located in the state.

Carolina Steel, a division of Florida Steel Corporation, has opened its new $3.3 million plant near Charlotte. The plant uses scrap as its “ore,” and sixty car-loads per month bring it to the mill. The article presents information on changing scrap into steel at the plant.

National Spinning Company was founded in 1920. The company opened its first North Carolina plant in Washington in 1953 and a second one at Whiteville in 1959. The company's wisdom was questioned because the plant locations were in areas of unskilled labor. Today these successful operations have a workforce of over 700 and annual payroll of over $2 million.
