Four years later he owned the Gastonia Mill and began a textile empire that at his death on January 20, 1962, included 147 plants in eighteen states and seven foreign countries. Around half of the plants and employees are located in the state.

He later sold the mill, but kept the machinery, moving it to Burlington where it became Burlington Mills. Now Burlington Industries, it is the world's largest textile manufacturing corporation.
