Weather observations have been taken on Hatteras Island since 1874. Much of the information on this period is contained in the weather station's log books, which are housed at the Cape Hatteras Weather Service. The books contain material on weather, shipwrecks, and local happenings. The SEA CHEST staff continues the entries started in the Spring/Summer issue. This issue's compilation covers 1875 to 1879.

The journal of James Bryan was recently discovered and is currently held at the Commission House at Tryon Palace Historic Sites and Gardens. James Bryan was a business owner in New Bern and oversaw the operations of several boats transporting goods along the eastern coast. His journal contains daily entries written during 1794-1799, and provides a wealth of historical and genealogical information to readers, researchers, and historians.

A continuation of the series begun in Sea Chest’s first edition, this collection of journal entries mostly chronicled the meteorological conditions between September 1874-July 1879. Wedged between daily reports of barometric pressure were occasional ones of ships setting sail and their minor damages. Rare reports were of loss of life from shipwrecks and drownings.

The Sea Chest staff continued the Weather Station’s briny borne adventures in these entries, chronicled between March-June 1876. Wedged between the ordinary reports of barometric pressure was the extraordinary three week disappearance of Private Hanes. To illustrate the difference between charting the weather during the 19th century and current methods, included were pictures of modern weather forecasting equipment.

This Cape Hatteras’ journal edition provided by the Sea Chest staff, covering September 1876, offered a surface impression of days not worth writing home about. Details consisted of barometric pressure, rainfall amounts, telegraph lines repairs, and mild illnesses among the staff. Of historical note, though, may be the photocopied image of September 17th’s handwritten entry.

This is a reprint of Asheville, NC attorney Augustus S. Merrimon who later became a United States Senator and the Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. The journal covers the circuit of superior and county courts of western North Carolina including Buncombe, Madison, Cherokee, Jackson, Haywood, Henderson and Yancey counties beginning on October 8, 1853 and concluding January 28, 1854.

This is a reprint of records from the Surry Country Agricultural Society which flourished from 1819 to 1823 in a semi-mountainous, remote section of North Carolina.
