The second story in the series on fracking in North Carolina (first story in May 11, 2011 issue). Private landowners are signing one-sided contracts with exploration companies searching for natural gas. Under these contracts, private citizens will earn less than citizens in other states where fracking is common. Additionally, the private landowners will be liable for the cost of cleanup in the case of environmental disasters, fines for zoning and land use violations, and other legal fees. These fees will likely cost them more than they will make from the royalties on their land.

UNC could overhaul or scrap the new wastewater treatment system at its Bingham Facility. The facility experienced several chemical leaks and discharges within the past year. Neighbors of the facility repeated told UNC their concerns about the facility’s environmental impact. The university may lose a federal grant and be fined by the state for the leaks. Neighbors are concerned about the quality of their water after leaks.

Pelada is a film that shows how soccer provides the opportunity for people to make connections and exchange joy anywhere in the world. The film was created by two former Duke soccer players. The filmmakers traveled to 25 countries looking to play soccer with the local people and talking to them to learn about their lives in their home countries. The film will be shown at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival.

The wetlands at UNC’s Bingham Facility have been polluted. The facility is facing many violations after storage ponds leaked, pipes broke, and hazardous chemicals were detected in the wastewater treatement system. Neighbors notified regulators of their concerns and UNC appears to have built their wastewater system over wetlands without state and federal permits. The violations will carry a fine if UNC does not offer an explanation and a plan to restore the wetlands or if they do not receive a permit allowing them to ignore the policies.

The company is still working on its signature game, Fallen Earth despite the layoffs. Former employees are upset and looking for new jobs while they wait to be paid for their work.

Offshore drilling may come to North Carolina in the future. The potential prospects for drilling for gas and oil off the coast of North Carolina are currently being explored. The Point off the shore of Hatteras Island is an area of particular interest to drilling companies, but the area is an environmentally sensitive area. Even if North Carolina does not allow drilling or allows drilling in areas other than The Point, all of the state’s coast, environment, and economy are at risk if other states drill for oil or gas and a spill occurs. An in-depth look at the impact offshore drilling could have on the state is detailed.

The number of people surrendering their horses has increased lately due to the poor economy and the cost of caring for one. There are many cases involving the surrendering or abuse of horses and the farm works hard to give them a proper home or prepare them for adoption.

Flynn turned over financial documents from the tenants to the FBI. The group is made up on undocumented immigrants who are risking deportation to fight for the DREAM Act. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is expanding its Resource Research Facility and this has its neighbors worried. UNC-CH did not share the plans with residents, but plans to build eleven new buildings and two wastewater treatment systems on the property. Residents are concerned about the environmental impact of the wastewater treatment systems. Specific ways in which the wastewater treatment systems could affect the local environment and residents near White Cross, NC are detailed.
