A highway marker in Bertie County also marks William Blount’s political career, encompassing decades of service and neighboring states. His career includes six state representative terms. Scandal erupting during his tenure as Senator yielded the threat of impeachment charge, but the charge was dismissed, leaving him clear to gain the governor’s seat in Tennessee.

A connecting point between an Outer Banks island and North Carolina’s mainland is named after Hyde County’s first commissioner. Advocate for improved infrastructure, he helped to keep the community’s roadways functional for generations. Through his years of service to the community, he also served as its memory, helping to connect lifeways old and current.

Abstract:
The first African American elected to Elizabeth City State Teacher’s College, Cooper was instrumental in Gates Training School becoming the first Gates County high school for African Americans. Respect earned from students and parents over a forty-year career also offered Cooper the privilege of an elementary school named in his honor.

A Beaufort County road pays tribute to a woman who served as a trailblazer in the medical and nursing fields. Credited as founding the first college of nursing in the United States, Dimock also became the first female doctor admitted to the American Medical Association.

Abstract:
The unincorporated community, with a currently unassuming reputation, had the county’s first brick school and was Northampton’s only stop off place for an American president. The citizen for whom the community is named, Margaret Bynum Jordan, is known for helping a slave escape to the North and her quilt hanging in the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts.
