The small western North Carolina town of Saluda rests just over 2,000 feet above sea level. It was once a railroad town, but now it relies on live music, local art, and outdoor recreation to bring visitors in.
The New Holland, Higginsport, and Mt. Vernon made local history as the only railroad to serve Hyde County. Its historical records are being kept by a nonprofit associated with the nearby lake whose filling in led to the railroad’s closure.
