The Rebel was first published in Fall 1958. The purpose of the magazine was to showcase the artwork and creative writing of the East Carolina University student body. The Rebel is printed with non-state funds. Beginning in the 1990s some volumes included a CD with featured music. No issues were published in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Rebel literary magazine features artwork, poetry, and essays by East Carolina students.
