ECU Libraries Collection Guides
The ECU Libraries archival collections contain the East Carolina Manuscript Collection, the Laupus Library History Collections, the Country Doctor Museum, the University Archives, and the North Carolina Collection. These combined holdings include over 2,000 collections of primary source material such as letters, diaries, photographs, oral histories, maps, and records that document the history of North Carolina, rural health care, worldwide military events, student life, and official East Carolina University operations.
Each collection guide contains a link to request materials that you wish to view in person. J. Y. Joyner Library Special Collections and Laupus Library History Collections each have different hours and policies for providing access to their collections. Please consult the appropriate repository with questions about using their materials. Collections are non-circulating and must be used in the repository's reading room.
Effective March 3rd, 2026 use of archival materials and rare books in the Special Collections Research Room at J.Y. Joyner Library will be available by appointment only. We will work with current ECU faculty and students to accommodate walk-in requests if possible. All other bookings will need to be made at least 12 hours in advance. Please contact Special Collections at https://library.ecu.edu/specialcollections/ask-a-librarian/ for more information or if you have any questions.
