Support for the Nature Conservancy has grown in five years to include nineteen companies in North Carolina. Corporate involvement is inspired by belief in the merit of the conservancy’s program and in many cases by the tax benefits. Since 1977, the North Carolina Chapter of the Nature Conservancy has preserved 50,000 acres.

Over one-hundred paintings purchased by the State Art Commission in 1952 with the General Assembly’s one-million-dollar appropriation of 1947 included several well-known Nativity scenes by European masters. One of the most important of them was Flemish master Peter Paul Rubens’, “The Holy Family with St. Anne.” A donation from the Phifer family of North Carolina to the State Art Society was also important in broadening the collection, which is now at the North Carolina Museum of Art.

Employees in North Carolina sought to decertify their existing unions by filing twenty petitions in 1983. Unions lost ground last year, but as business was coming out of the recession, unions were recovering also. So long as North Carolina remains the least unionized state, we can expect our industries to be targets for labor organization.

Recent research has shown that the Developmental Economic Education Program, is sponsored by the North Carolina Council on Economic Education, is having positive effects on student learning. Students at schools which participate in the program are significantly more likely to understand the role of profits in a market economy, competition, and the relationship between education and income.

Health products manufacturing has become an important asset to North Carolina’s economy. A study commissioned by the North Carolina Health Products Manufacturers Association surveyed fourteen manufacturing firms which produce pharmaceuticals or medical devices. These firms are attractive because they offer high wages, increasing employment opportunities and largely pollution-free production processes.
