Abstract:
Students from the eighth grade class in Aurora completed a project that reported on the history agriculture and citizenry of their local township. This included subjects such as local resident Paul Lincke who wrote the song Shine Little Glowworm, and the use of Tarkle beds to extract tar from wood.

James Leroy Smith and Deirdre Mageean were appointed to fill vice chancellor positions at East Carolina University in the spring of 2005. Smith, interim vice chancellor for academic affairs at ECU, was named provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. Mageean, associate vice president for research and dean of the graduate school for the University of Maine, was named vice chancellor for research and graduate studies.

David Moore began his search for Blackbeard's ship, the QUEEN ANNE'S REVENGE, in 1982, when he was a graduate student in East Carolina University's Maritime Studies program. Years as a history detective and Blackbeard researcher paid off in 1996 when the ship was located near the site he predicted the wreck lay. Moore used old charts and records in London, Virginia, and North and South Carolina in his search, but it was a document found in ECU's Joyner Library that was the key piece. Moore is curator of nautical archaeology at the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort.

There are over one hundred separately organized electric utilities that serve customers in North Carolina. Depending on the location of an individual's home or place of employment, electric service could be provided from a consumer-owned cooperative, an investor-owner utility, a city government, or some other utility operating in the state. Each type of service covers a designated area.

Created in 1994 by North Carolina's Touchstone Energy cooperatives, the Bright Ideas program helps teachers who were funding classroom-based projects out of their own pockets. Since then, Touchstone Energy cooperatives have funded over $4.5 million in grants that have reached 800,000 of the state's school children. Grants in 2005 reached a record of $540,000.

Two of the state's Touchstone Energy cooperatives received recognition for the care they take in the management of trees and other vegetation affecting power lines and poles. Union Power Cooperative is the first North Carolina utility to be named a Tree Line USA Utility. This award is sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters. The Dow AgroSciences industry magazine, Right-of-Way Vistas, recognized Pee Dee Electric for its right-of-way vegetation management program. The cooperatives serve a region between Charlotte and Lumberton.
