The daughter of a tobacco farmer, Ava Gardner was born on Christmas Eve, 1922, near Smithfield. She achieved movie stardom in such films as THE SUN ALSO RISES. The Ava Gardner Museum in Smithfield contains 100,000 mementos of her career.
