The Jones Award for Excellence in Coastal and Marine Graduate Study recognizes graduate students whose research \"promises to contribute materially to the development of new or improved approaches to coastal or ocean management.\" Six North Carolina students and the Town of Plymouth received the national award in 2012. Settlage lists the award winners and gives a brief summary of their research.

Four graduate students from around North Carolina have been named finalists for the 2019 John A. Krauss Marine Policy Fellowship. Fellows will be placed in federal government offices for one-year appointments; fellows include Alicia M. Cheripka, Chrissy Hayes, Jill Hamilton, and William Thaxton.

Abstract:
Four newly funded projects cover a host of coastal topics for various community-based collaborations. Projects range from studying marsh changes in the Currituck Sound, supplying cape shark to schools for lunch, educating about restored estuarine habitats, and an oral history of the 1997 Fisheries Reform Act.

Although a Raleigh native, John Fear's youth in New Bern put him on the path to being a coastal scientist. Fear fueled his coastal curiosity through academia, field research, resource management, research administration and now as the Deputy Director of North Carolina Sea Grant and the Water Resources Research Institute of the University of North Carolina System.

The North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort, NC became a part of the NC Department of Cultural Resources on Aug 8, 1997. Tracing it’s origin to a collection created in 1898 for the International Fisheries Exposition, the museum was placed under the NC Department of Agriculture in 1959, and did not have a full time curator until 1975.

The town of Nags Head has conducted a research survey to determine whether those living in and governing Nags Head were aware of the coastal hazards. The participants were asked various questions concerning coastal hazards. The results will be used to further options for adaptation to coastal hazards.

RISING is an ongoing multi-disciplinary project that incorporates oral histories with scientific research funded by the North Carolina Sea Grant. Oral histories collected from residents on the Outer Banks highlight the scientific research of climate change, environmental impacts, and preventative measures alongside stunning photographs.

Ten new North Carolina Sea Grant research projects have been set up for 2018 to 2020. These projects include subjects such as community resilience to natural disasters, shoreline and estuary water management, and several involving oysters and oyster reefs. These are all designed to assist with real-world problems and address current issues along the coast.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) presents the Walter B. Jones Awards for Coastal and Ocean Resource Management. This year, six recipients are from North Carolina ranging in topics such as construction and erosion, water protection and restoration, sustainable coastal zone use, fisheries and wildlife conservation, science communications, and local government initiatives.
