Across Jarrett Bay from Williston in Carteret County lies Davis Ridge, a fishing community founded by liberated slaves in 1865 and destroyed by a hurricane in 1933. The self-sufficient town enjoyed a unique, close relationship with its white neighbors.

Marine ecology master's student, Shannon Brown, discusses her project of studying soundscapes in Middle Marsh on the North Carolina coast. A soundscape is the mixture of environmental sounds in a particular ecosystem. These sounds can include biological, physical, and human noises.

Abstract:
This article describes how two projects have expanded beyond their early support from the North Carolina Sea Grant. On the southern coast of North Carolina, a new species of butterfly, the crystal skipper, makes its permanent home within a 30-mile stretch of sand dune. People-First Tourism, Inc., (P1t) creates an online marketplace where the public has direct pathways to vetted microentrepreneurs.

The North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort, NC became a part of the NC Department of Cultural Resources on Aug 8, 1997. Tracing it’s origin to a collection created in 1898 for the International Fisheries Exposition, the museum was placed under the NC Department of Agriculture in 1959, and did not have a full time curator until 1975.
