Abstract:
Whiteville, the county seat of Columbus County, first appeared in written records in a 1733 land grant. The town was heavily involved in agriculture throughout its history, producing tobacco, timber, naval stores, and pecans. La Vere discusses the town's history and some of its interesting personalities. Attractions for visitors include the Pecan Festival, Guiton's Drug Store, the Vineland Depot, and the North Carolina Museum of Forestry.

Whiteville, county seat of Columbus County, is featured in The State's series on North Carolina cities. The city is a large tobacco center. Its substantial growth has enabled it to become the trading center for a large part of the area, and the city is an excellent place to live. J.S. Mann returned from a convention in Winston-Salem with a beautiful cup that is the pride of Whiteville. The W. T. Joyner trophy is presented each year by the State Department to the American Legion post doing the best work in rehabilitation and community service.

Understanding this Whiteville lifelong resident entailed revealing details such as his early attempt to follow in his father’s footsteps, WWII service, graduation from Duke, civic contributions, home life with his family. The best way to understand Lawrence Bowers, though, seemed to lie in understanding his passion for the career he chose over bridge building: banking.

Cited as the third largest lake in North Carolina and home to endemic species, Lake Wacccamaw’s unique qualities include theories for its origins. Beliefs about the Carolina Bays’ creation range from the handiwork of meteors to the swimming patterns of its fish. As for the community surrounding the lake, Whiteville residents are also defined by the author as endemic. They thrive on small town values, such as tending to the town’s history and resisting a transformation into a tourist site.
