In North Carolina, the Tuscarora was one of the six Indian groups whose arrival preceded Europeans by many centuries. The 1713 battle in New Bern yielding the massacre of nine hundred, and knelled their way of life. As for who initiated this battle, it is certain. Was it Europeans wanting the land? Was it other Indian groups wanting to destroy them?

Moving day involved the Coor-Cook House, whose construction began in the 1790s, and Law Office, built in the 1850s. The two buildings, moved in 1981, were purchased by the Historic New Bern Foundation. The buildings’ value was expressed in the Foundation not wanting them demolished to make way for parking lots or an extension of the court house.

The base known familiarly as Cherry Point has followed a longstanding military tradition for North Carolina, with Marines on coastal duty since 1777. Cherry Point’s history included its founding, attributed to the Quantico, Virginia base being deemed inadequate.
