UNC system schools participating in NC Promise, which offers a tuition reduction for all students, are Elizabeth City State University, UNC Pembroke, and Western Carolina University. Past decreased enrollment was the factor related to the selection of these schools. Increasing affordability for students from all economic backgrounds and gaining academically competitive students were cited as reasons for creating NC Promise.

Today, the name Havelock may be synonymous with the air force station located nearby, which currently employs more than 14,300 individuals and generates 2.2 billion dollars for the region’s economy. Perhaps not considered so often about the town first named Slocum’s Creek is its close proximity to Crystal Coast beaches. It was cited by the author as a factor leading many personnel stationed at Cherry Point to make Havelock home, post retirement.

Many small towns in North Carolina are experiencing a crisis towns and cities are invulnerable to. Younger generations are moving out in search of better jobs; companies once occupational mainstays are closing; opportunities for infrastructure improvement and economic recovery are lost. For their citizens, the toll can be seen in skyrocketing rates of poverty, disability, overdose, and addiction. Efforts to combat this crisis include Governor Roy Cooper’s Hometown Strong. This program is designed to rejuvenate downtowns, upskill workers, provide small business loans, and enhance high speed Internet connections.

Universities like East Carolina University and towns like Durham have a mixed response to the presence of LimeBike. Likewise can be said for cities like Charlotte, with their own version of bike-sharing programs. A positive result is citizens utilizing a healthier form of transport. A negative result comes from cyclists irresponsibly parking the bikes after use.

Defined as the Olympic Games equivalent for horses is the World Equestrian Games. Cited as the most attended sports event in the state, its projected revenue was 400 million dollars. The thirteen-day event was expected to impact the economies of towns such as Asheville and Hendersonville. Tryon International Equestrian Center’s as its locale can be attributed to its efforts at revitalizing the surrounding job market, in initiatives such as reviving All American Homes of North Carolina, Inc. as US Precision Construction LLC. Choosing North Carolina as its site may be a nod to its reputation for producing thoroughbreds such as Sir Archie, whose descendants include Secretariat, Seattle Slew, and Native Dancer.
