Recently the Environmental Studies Council at the University of North Carolina surveyed 1,000 influential North Carolinians to find what they considered to be the state's most important environmental problems. Water quality, waste disposal, and industrial pollution ranked among the top.

North Carolina’s greatest environmental problems are related to sediment, nutrients, and eutrophication issues implicating public health and activity. Hydrilla, an invasive weed, is threatening freshwater lakes and impeding boating activities. Industrial pollution and toxic metals are contaminating fish and limiting fish consumption.

Dr. Jay Hair, National Wildlife Federation President, recently addressed the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission to discuss an overwhelming number of environmental issues. It will be difficulty for the Commission to satisfy all their constituents, but Hair advises to focus efforts on education and public awareness.

Josh Fox’s returns to North Carolina with his latest film, How to Let Go of the World and Love All the Things Climate Can’t Change. The film looks into environmental issues such as fracking, sea level rise, and pollution. Fox believes grassroots organizations are the only way to effectively deal with these problems.

The North Carolina Citizen Survey, conducted in the fall of 1983 and 1984, contained questions on environmental issues facing North Carolina. The results found that North Carolinians place high value on environmental quality and maintenance, and the majority consider the state’s environment to be good. Waste disposal is seen as the primary threat to the environment.

In the 1987 State of the Environment Report, two major concerns were the quality and quantity of North Carolina’s water resources, and hazardous and radioactive waste management. According to the report, the state must give priority attention to water and waste management because of the declining role of the federal government in these areas.
