The Livermon Park and Mini-zoo in Windsor, North Carolina has made some new additions to their park. The park itself has new upgrades and the mini-zoo boasts a new zebra. The park is considered by many to be an excellent spot for summer picnics, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, and much more.

Teddy Phelps, a long-time Creswell resident, has been building miniature wooden structures since the death of his father four years ago. They range from tobacco barns to the well-known Collins House. He has won several prizes for his works in both the Chowan County and the North Carolina State Fair.

The Aurora Fossil Museum in Beaufort County is one of the last non-admission museums in the state and last year, had at least one visitor from every state. The recent addition the PotashCorp Mine Room is hoped to attract even more visitors to the museum and the local Fossil Festival held annually in May. This year the museum will be raffling off a megalodon shark tooth to support the festival.

Charles and Karen Vaughan took a home owned by Charles’ great-great grandfather and restored it to its former glory. There were a few renovations not specific to the original house such as the added kitchen space, converting the barn into a guesthouse, and the chicken coop into an outdoor living space. The furnishings are from a variety of periods, and the house was entered on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

The Pamlico Writer’s Conference will be held on March 18 and 19 this year. It will feature a series of small sessions by various speakers as well as a keynote speaker and two panel presentations. This year’s keynote speaker is Sharyn McCrumb, an Appalachian writer. The aim of this conference is to help people improve their writing, especially in a world where many self-publish their books.

The Sylvan Height Avian Breeding Center breeds and raises the ducklings of many species. Their activities include rescue of foundlings as well as steps to ensure the survival of a more endangered species. The center located in Scotland Neck is open to visitation and attracts many interested visitors each year.

Jockey’s Ridge has an intriguing history from its namesake, a shifting sand dune, to vanished buildings buried under the sand. Today, the ridge is a huge draw on the Outer Banks and is part of the Jockey’s Ridge State Park. The park offers numerous outdoor activities for everyone, including the handicapped.

As part of its spring arts festival, Tarboro will be hosting an April performance and ten-day workshop by the New York Theatre Ballet. Events will also include a memorial exhibition in honor of Edgecombe native Hobson Pittman. Pitman was renowned for paintings evoking the South. Bob Burke has been honored by Chowan University by having the Helms Center court named for him. The legendary coach headed the Chowan Basketball program for 22 years. Many of his players went on to compete at teh NCAA Division I Level.

Earl Bailey has dedicated much of his life to the art of printmaking at the Martin County Enterprise and Weekly Herald in Williamston. When Bailey began his career in the 1960s, the newspaper used letterpresses to print type on newsprint. Though the newspaper is no longer printed in Williamston, Bailey still does a lot of press work on stationary, letterheads and business cards.
