At Old Havana Sandwich Shop, Copa Matos and his wife Elizabeth Turnbull have dug up both local ingredients and a rich culinary history, pressing them into sandwiches and showcasing them in their recent dinner series “Lost Dishes of Cuba”. The small farm-to-table restaurant has been operating for six years in Durham.

Dom Flemons, Kaia Kater, and Jerron “Blind Boy” Paxton are among a handful of people of color who are asserting their rightful place in folk, bluegrass, and old-time music. The three musicians recognize the centuries-long impact of racial discrimination in music. Their performance in Raleigh will spotlight the African roots of the banjo, and feature music and songs which use rhetoric as a way to break barriers and open minds.

In recent years, local choreographers have made a lot of work about the challenges of maintaining individuality in an artistic community and in society generally. In Echo, a collaboration between dancer-choreographer Justin Tornow and visual artist Heather Gordon, different levels of identity are explored. Tornow splits the same performance, presented differently, across several spaces within the 21c Museum Hotel in Durham.

Raleigh’s historic Maiden Lane was born in the shadow of North Carolina State University, and part of a history steeped in fraternity parties and punk rock music. Despite its history, much of Maiden Lane will be re-developed into an apartment complex called Hillstone Cameron Village.

Michael Peterson, a former Durham mayoral candidate and Herald-Sun columnist, was convicted in 2003 for murdering his wife and pleaded innocent. A few months before a May 2017 retrial, he changed his plea to guilty but maintains innocence. After fifteen years, the case concludes but provides little closure to his family.

This is Not a Novel is the most recent show by The Little Green Pig Theatrical Concern in Durham. Directed by Jaybird O’Berski, the show is derived from a tetralogy of books by David Markson. Audience members walk through the production with a downloaded audio play to accompany live action drama, film, dance and visual art combined in a singular experience.

Patrick Dougherty, a Chapel Hill-based artist, has earned a global reputation for large-scale forms composed entirely of tree branches and saplings. The “stickwork” resembles the nests of enormous birds, primitive architecture, or even paintings. Dougherty’s latest work is featured on the south lawn of Sarah P. Duke Gardens in Durham.

North Carolina’s legislative and congressional districts have changed boundaries numerous times before primaries and elections. Last month, Republicans introduced House Bill 200, which would establish an independent redistricting commission. Members of both parties would be appointed to the commission and it would take redistricting mostly out of the lawmakers’ hands.

Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniels, hip-hop legend of Run-D.M.C., is coming to Raleigh for the North Carolina Comicon: Oak City. Growing up as a Catholic schoolkid, comics helped McDaniels to express himself through rap and hip-hop. He founded Darryl Makes Comics and created a series of critically acclaimed graphic novels.

The project aims to highlight issues of water use around the globe and to find better ways of managing water resources.
