Tiger World, housing the expected tigers, includes lions, bears, otters, wallabies, and parrots among its animals rescued from places like shut down zoos. The wildlife refuge in Rowan County, welcoming over 100,000 visitors annually, relies on corporate donations and volunteers for daily operation and care of its animals, numbering over 110 and representing 54 species.

Universities across North Carolina have an eclectic approach when it comes to their degree programs. Recognizing the collective student body’s transformation in the past few decades, universities such as NC State and High Point University are trying to better meet their students’ needs. Examples include NC State’s MBA collaboratories, or half day workshops involving field experts and senior leaders, and High Point’s MBA courses, which are typically twenty minute lecture, two hour and forty minute group discussion and interaction.

Proceeds from Zaki Khalifa’s business donated to Akhuwat will partly fulfill his mission: to help Pakistani children have a better quality life. North Carolina Zoo received additional exhibits and a long overdue maintenance upgrade, thanks to resources such as Connect NC Bond Package. One of two state zoos in the nation, the facility now offering entertainment such as the Zoofari bus ride and Asian region exhibit justifies its upgraded financial support with 2017’s record attendance of 860,168 visitors.

Training and maintaining a quality workforce for North Carolina involved preparing individuals throughout their lives. Examples of programs preparing North Carolinians for the workforce before high school graduation included a partnership between Randolph County schools and local factories, which entailed middle school students receiving on-site tours and engaging in hands-on activities. As for enhancing the preparation of adult students, programs included a partnership between Pitt Community College and Vidant Medical Center, which involved a grant providing nursing program students equipment for a simulation hospital.

The astronomical cost of university tuition and fees, plus the loans often used to pay this debt, has left many legislators seeking resolutions for the short and long term negative impacts. Solutions included the “last dollar” grant for high school graduates students with a GPA of 3.5 or above and encouraging more community college attendance. Statistics indicating the enormity of this crisis and feasibility of a community college degree include graduates defaulting on loans and students who graduate from community colleges debt free.

Businesses with this potential include Self Help, a Durham based credit union; apartments; and the New York based LT Apparel Group. Revolution Mills and its community also offers a synthesis of old and new. Revolution Mills’ structure is maintaining its architectural integrity, while the surrounding area caters to modern tastes such as bicycling and hiking trails.

This urban revival project, initiated by Myers Park Presbyterian Church, sought to offer families in Charlotte’s Grier Heights better housing. Constructed by the church’s nonprofit CrossRoads, it consists of 35 mixed income housing sold to individuals making 80% of area median income. Other endeavors undertaken by CrossRoads to improve the surrounding area include after-school programs and continuing education opportunities.

The closing of Eden’s MillerCoors negatively impacted the town’s other large business, Morehead Memorial Hospital. Its closing served as a reminder of factors that leave towns like Eden and its rural Rockingham County economically vulnerable, such as brain drain and the rural-urban divide. Believed reasons why it closed included Anheuser-Busch In-Bev’s purchased SAB-Miller not having competition. Believed reasons why it remains closed includes the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina favoring cities.
