21C Museum Hotel will open in Durham in 2015 in the historic Hill Building. The hotel will feature rooms for rent, an exhibition space for art, a restaurant, and a raw bar. The museum will be free to the public and open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The art hotel concept is one of three in the country and Durham was chosen as a location for its vibrant art community.

Greenfire Development purchased Durham's iconic SunTrust tower and is now teaming with Kentucky-based 21c Museum Hotels to turn the building into a hotel. Proposed plans are to turn the tower into a 125-room luxury hotel if the company can secure tax incentives. Durham City Council will hold a public hearing Monday, August 6th to hear the company's proposal.

North Carolina's hotel industry is rapidly growing. During the past four years the number of rooms increased by over 19,000, for a total of 125,000. Big-city convention centers create a strong demands for rooms, as does tourism in the mountains and along the coasts. New hotels also create more jobs, especially in the service areas. Kimbish discusses what amenities hotels like the Grove Park Inn in Asheville and Greensboro's O. Henry Hotel provide to keep their rooms filled.

The Clingendael Investment Corporation, a Dutch firm of which Julius Verwoerdt is chairman, is building an elegant resort near Chapel Hill called Hotel Europa. Verwoerdt is a Dutch entrepreneur who lives in Durham, and has owned the largest chain of hotels in Holland. Hotel Europa will have a significant impact to the Research Triangle area because of the distinct European influence of the ownership, management and design.
