A Durham dry cleaning store has been demolished but traces of chemicals are left behind. The cleaners failed to comply with chemical safety resulting in contamination of the area with tetrachloroethylene or PERC. Residents in the area are concerned about the spread of this cancer-causing chemical into their neighborhood.

It seems in Durham, mini-marts and alcohol don't mix. Many of the convenience stores that hold state permits to sell beer and fortified wine has trouble with criminal activity on or near its premises.

Greenfire Development purchased Durham's iconic SunTrust tower and is now teaming with Kentucky-based 21c Museum Hotels to turn the building into a hotel. Proposed plans are to turn the tower into a 125-room luxury hotel if the company can secure tax incentives. Durham City Council will hold a public hearing Monday, August 6th to hear the company's proposal.

The Durham County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a measure to ban smoking on sidewalks and trails, bus stops, parks, and other publicly owned property. Passed in February, the ban goes into effect later this month and violators will be charged a $50 fine if caught smoking any tobacco products in the newly protected public areas.

Durham City Council members approved a plan presented by a Kentucky based company called 21c Museum Hotels to transform the SunTrust building into a hotel and art gallery. The tower has been an iconic feature of the Durham skyline for 75 years. The vote was unanimous and within three years renovations should be completed.

Last month the Raleigh Police Department enacted the Performance-Based Management System. Since then 200 employees have filed complaints against the system saying it values quantity over quality. The Raleigh Police Protective Association is a union-backed organization receiving these complaints about the nature of the new system that prioritizes certain activities, creating a quota-based system.

Greenfire Development, the group which just sold Durham's Suntrust Bank tower, is being sued by four tenants. The tenants rented studio space in the Liberty Warehouse, a renovated tobacco warehouse. Dispute between tenants and the company arose over a collapsed roof after heavy rains in March 2011.

A dispute between state and local ordinance concerning outdoor advertising demonstrates the tension between local and state government. In Durham, there is an ongoing legal battle about management of green space around billboards along highways. Environmentalists in Durham are fighting to extend the review period for applications to alter the landscape around a billboard to permit not only state but local officials to approve or disprove.

Granny flats, or detached backyard dwellings also known as accessory homes or backyard cottages, were built in the last decade in Durham border Duke University's East Campus after local ordinances governing their construction were revamped. But due to the the enforcement of an invalid city code, many have been left empty and cut off from potential renters. Coleman discusses the use of the occupancy by primary owner clause, its invalidation by the North Carolina Court of Appeals in 2008, and how Durham officials were unaware until recently that they were not supposed to enforce it.

The cost of putting an armed officer in every school in Wake County is explored after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut. Adding an officer in all of the county’s 169 schools would cost the district 13.5 million dollars. Currently, the district only has 54 officers in schools and the pros and cons of increasing the number of officers is discussed.
