Built in 1899, the River Forest Manor is today owned by Axson Smith, Jr., who inherited the manor after his father's death earlier this year. The Belhaven house has entertained sportsmen, vacationers, and food-lovers. Among notables having visited the manor are the Roosevelt boys, Robert Ripley, and Roy.

Abstract:
Built in 1900 by the newly formed Seaboard Airline Railroad, the Hamlet Station, in Hamlet N.C., was once the principal stop for refueling and crew exchanges between large northern cities and the deep south. Although it has been recently added to the National Historic Register, the terminal is slated for replacement and hopes are that the building will be saved and converted to a museum.

Appalachian poet and novelist John Foster West, author of Time Was and The Ballad of Tom Dula, revisits his childhood home in Wilkes County. West, who now lives near Blowing Rock and teaches Poetry and Creative Writing at Appalachian University, is at work on his fourth novel THE LONG WAY HOME.
