The first in a two-part series, this article addresses the effects of the annual flooding of the Roanoke River on wild turkey populations. The authors are critical of the flooding, and suggest that the river's flood pattern be checked.

North Carolina has a network of seventy-seven continuous-record stream gages operated by the United States Geological Survey. These gages collect real-time data to help the state to respond to floods and manage water-supply systems during droughts. Currently, there are concerns about funding to maintain the network and to offset increasing maintenance costs.

A large scale study initiated through the North Carolina Sea Grant, NCDOT and other state and local government entities has determined that thoughtful planning and targeted route improvements or "resilient routes" for highways are key to dealing with eastern north Carolina's flooding issues after significant storms.
