Laura Ritchie is an entrepreneur, cofounder, and curator of Durham’s Carrack Modern Art. This zero-commission art gallery promotes young artists who get to keep all of the proceeds of their two-week exhibitions. Ritchie volunteers as curator as she works as the educational outreach coordinator for Durham Art Guild. She is the winner of a 2014 Indie Art Award.

NC State junior Clint Bowman recently created a nonprofit to promote North Carolina folk artists to new, young audiences. The concept is to use a small series of concerts to expose artists without a label to new fans. The 20-year old began the project as an assignment for an arts entrepreneur class and made the nonprofit a reality during his summer break. Bowman hopes to expand the project over time.

The Cookery will open as Durham’s first culinary incubator and certified kitchen space for rent. Entrepreneurs Nick Hawthorne-Johnson and Rochelle Johnson have opened the kitchen available 24/7 for rent to local businesses and individuals like food truck owners, artisanal bakers, or anyone without a permanent restaurant location. As a small business incubator, The Cookery will also offer business, marketing, and communications classes through Johnson’s Row Design Studios.

Supporters are not the only ones creating paraphernalia as local entrepreneurs see the opportunity to make money selling Obama paraphernalia. Photos of locally made items are included.
