During the 1950s, the author worked as a summer camp counselor at Camp Morehead. Primarily a boys’ camp, three weeks were set aside each summer for co-ed habitation. The author herself had attended camp during one such session where she learned to sail. Returning in college as a counselor, the author was placed in charge of sailing instruction and office duty which included running errands. Throughout the summer, campers were brought into Morehead City to visit various stores and enjoy some of the local cuisine.

Camps for boys and girls both along the coast and in the mountains outnumbered those in any other state. As reported in 1942, more than a million dollars was spent on camping within the state. One such camp was Camp Sequoyah located 16 miles from Asheville. This boys' camp covered 125 acres, had 42 buildings, and included athletic fields, a private lake, tennis courts, outdoor theater space, and riding field. Camp goers could engage in typical activities including nature and art lessons, carpentry, boating, etc.

Girls Rock NC is a winner of a 2014 Indie Art Award. The group runs a camp, after school programs, and retreats for adults. Their main initiative is a music camp for girls 7-16 to help them learn to raise their voices as young women through music. The Chapel Hill group hosts sessions on body confidence, the history of women in music, and leadership. Girls Rock NC helps girls gain confidence and works for social justice.

Since 1982, the Gwynn Valley Camp in Brevard has served as a summer camp for children. Residential and day camps, as well as 4-H programs use the camp to teach children about the farm-to-table process by encouraging interaction with farm animals, planting seeds, and harvesting vegetables.

Raleigh resident Kaitlyn Goalen is co-publisher and editor of the Short Stack cookbook series. Each entry in the series is devoted to one ingredient and is hand-stiched, containing only 20 recipes. The series has been successful in the saturated cookbook market. Goalen is also the founder of Wild Yonder, a Raleigh based outdoor food-based camp for adults.
