This avian sanctuary offers more than shelter for a myriad of water and land fowl. For North Carolina and Virginia’s public school students, it has become a popular field trip destination. On a higher education note, East Carolina University and Sylvan Heights are collaborating in endangered species conservation and research opportunities. Individuals of all ages can partake in its other educational endeavors: festivals, guided tours, conservation and research talks, field sketching workshops, and birding trips.

Reprinted was Clarissa Humphrey’s November 17, 1941 Pieces of Eight article. She described the then current First Lady and author of daily “My Day” newspaper column’s visit. Also reprinted was her article’s accompanied photo of Roosevelt and a local Girl Scouts troop on the Dail House steps. Included was the “My Day” article written by Roosevelt the day after her visit.

College coaches were promoting mental calisthenics. Illustrating how it could work on the field and off were tips to improve mental agility. Included were awareness of mental pulse; avoidance of mental blindness; adoption of traits such as loyalty, hard work, and selflessness.

Scottie Montgomery’s tenure as head football coach was predicted to be promising, from his dedication to producing a quality football team and coaching staff. Among his players, he emphasized model student behavior, rigorous conditioning, community service engagement, and preparation for life post-graduation. For his coaching staff, he emphasized a family atmosphere and open door policy to help staff with limited experience develop professionally.

Alluding to an article in an earlier edition about Kate Beckwith, the author discusses his mother who he believed was influenced by East Carolina Teachers Training School’s first principal. In reference to his mother’s teaching career, he noted North Carolina’s contribution to the well-known schoolteacher stereotype. According to him, female teachers could not be married.

For this second generation ECU alumna, the snowstorm of 1943 could have been something worth writing home about. Noteworthy items in this present day reflection included the shortage of male students and rationed items on campus during World War II. Meeting the professed love of her life that day, though, alone would have made it significant and special.

ECU student teachers perhaps can relate to the common concerns cited by this ECTTS student teacher. January 6, 1920 at Greenville’s Joyner School included the day starting with a bell and activities like recess and dinner. Concerns more timely than timeless included games like Sling the Biscuit, a car starting up with a crank, and speeding defined as driving at five miles an hour.

East Carolina University’s Pharmaceutical Service Center, also called PSC@ECU, promised a positive economic and occupational impact on the local community and state. Among the project’s goals to ensure this positive impact: educating students and workers for the highly regulated pharmaceutical development and manufacturing environments; enabling workers to be immediately productive in complex jobs requiring multi-disciplinary skills.

If silver coins were true in weight and value, could be determined by the reale. This scale- like instrument was recovered in the fall of 2011 from an Outer Banks wreck believed to be Blackbeard’s flagship. This artifact, among the 211 recovered, was perhaps beyond measure in other ways. Other items perhaps beyond price included glass panes from the captain’s cabin.

Among ECU’s accomplishments can be added Aramark and the Volunteer and Service Learning Center’s collaborative creation of Campus Kitchen. It was the first among institutions in the UNC system. As for other ECU students’ food-related endeavors, mentioned was their packing of care packages for military members serving overseas.

Universities like East Carolina University and towns like Durham have a mixed response to the presence of LimeBike. Likewise can be said for cities like Charlotte, with their own version of bike-sharing programs. A positive result is citizens utilizing a healthier form of transport. A negative result comes from cyclists irresponsibly parking the bikes after use.
