Interestingly, tobacco actually helped build the sweet potato industry in North Carolina. Subsidies used to halt tobacco production due to health concerns laid the infrastructure for current sweet potato production. Climate controlled storage and the introduction of the Covington variety of sweet potato have been significant in making the crop a year-round one in North Carolina.

William Munn, N.C. Justice Center scholar stresses the importance of thinking on the "three North Carolinas"; namely, the urban, the white rural and the Black Belt. Munn, a graduate of Goldsboro High School, completed a doctoral dissertation at N.C. A&T State University in 2016 entitled, "Running Away from Home: Social and Economic Explanators of Net Migration in North Carolina Black Belt Counties".

Leinwands, a 6,00 square foot department store located in Elizabethtown in Bladen County continues as a thriving business today despite a very changed retail climate that has seen the extinction of most family run small town department stores. The Leinwand family is among a number of Jewish families that arrived in the South and North Carolina in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century as merchants. Ricky and Eileen Silvers Leinwand are the current third generation owners of the business.
