Abstract:
The red-cockaded woodpecker has been on the endangered species list since 1970. In 1999, the North Carolina Department of Transportation purchased 9,732 acres in northeastern Tyrrell County for $16.5 million to establish a preserve. Currently 18 woodpecker colonies live there. The land is heavily forested and fronts the Albemarle Sound and Little Alligator River. Over the next 7 years the department will set aside $175 million for wetlands preservation, stream restoration, and wildlife protection.

Abstract:
George Washington Creef designed and built the shad boat on Roanoke Island in Dare County around 1878. In 1987, the North Carolina General Assembly designated it North Carolina's State Historical Boat.

Abstract:
Charlotte architect S. Scott Ferebee, Jr. received the 2004 F. Carter Williams Gold Medal from the North Carolina Chapter of AIA. The award recognizes a distinguished career of extraordinary achievements as an architect. Ferebee received his bachelor of architectural engineering degree from North Carolina State University in 1948. One of his most notable career accomplishments was the role he played in establishing the College of Architecture at UNC Charlotte.

Abstract:
North Carolina law recognizes the ever-changing nature of the circumstances on which a child custody or support orders are based. Therefore, the court has the authority to modify provisions of a custody or support order within limits. A person seeking to modify an order has the burden to prove sufficient changes in circumstances in order to justify changes in respect to custody, visitation, or support.

Abstract:
On May 3, 2004, President and Mrs. George W. Bush presented the Preserve America Presidential Award to the staff of the North Carolina Arts Council. The award recognizes agencies, non-profit organizations, and individuals in the Appalachian region of North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, and Georgia who collaborated on a project called the Blue Ridge Heritage Initiative. Since 1996, those involved in the project have worked to develop heritage tourism as a way of preserving the region's cultural traditions.

Abstract:
The nature of interstate child support cases is complex regarding issues of jurisdiction, choice of laws, remedies, and practical problems deal with processing and communications. Given the increasing complexity and inherent difficulties in such cases, the Uniform Reciprocal Enforcement of Support Act (URESA) has been replaced with the Uniform Interstate Family Support Act (UIFSA). Also enacted in North Carolina, the law provides for better support and enforcement of provisions across state-lines.
