James Brooks, an English, film and photojournalism teacher at West Wilkes High School in Wilkes County, received the 2007 NEA Member Benefits-NEA Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence. The award was in recognition of his outstanding instructional expertise, attention to diversity, dedication to life-long learning, and creativity and innovation. The award carries a prize of $25,000. Brooks also was awarded the 2005 Terry Sanford Award for Creativity in Teaching and Administration.

Site Selection magazine has named Statesville/Mooresville the nation's top micropolitan area for a record-setting third consecutive year. A micropolitan area has a population of 50,000 or less. The award recognized Statesville/Mooresvile's ability to secure newly relocated businesses and expand existing ones. The Census Bureau classifies 674 counties as micropolitan areas.

The North Carolina Travel and Promotion Division maintains a freshwater record list and a saltwater record list for fish caught in the state's waters. The article discusses requirements for getting a fish recognized as a record. Information on records catches through March 1974 include species, weight, location caught, lure or bait used, date caught, and the angler.

In the All-America City competition, North Carolina cities and towns have a strong record. Since 1949, twenty-nine state municipalities and two counties have received the designation. Clinton and Hickory were two of the ten award winners nationwide in the 2007 All-America City Award program, which annually recognizes communities that engage in creative collaborative problem solving and civic improvement. This is Hickory's third time to receive the award, joining twenty-eight other cities that have done so. Asheville and Laurinburg are also triple winners in North Carolina.

James Bell, an eighth grade English teacher at Chowan Middle School, Chowan County, is the 2007 North Carolina Teacher of the Year. As Teacher of the Year, he will spend the school year traveling around the state talking with others in the education field and parents. Three other teachers who were selected as Regional Teachers of the Year will serve on the 2007-2008 Teacher of the Year Team. They are Beth Howard, a visual arts teacher at Dixon Elementary School in Onslow County; Sonya Kiser, an English teacher at North Johnston High School in Johnston County; and Shawn Watlington, a history teacher at Greensboro Middle College, in Guilford County.

Curt Farmer is featured in this month's NC MAGAZINE's “executive profile.” Farmer, a graduate of Wake Forest University, is director of Wachovia Bank's Wealth Management division for the Carolinas and Virginia. He was recently promoted to executive vice president. He manages a team of about 220 wealth management professionals in 22 offices from Charlottesville to Savannah. Besides managing this team, he devotes 30 percent to 40 percent of his time to meeting with clients or courting prospective ones.

The 1976-1977 hunting season was the first year of mandatory tagging for all big game species in North Carolina. Statewide turkey, wild boar, and bear kills are reported by counties. Deer kills are reported by counties and include sex of the deer; manner of taking, such as rifle, bow, or shotgun; and lands, such as game lands or others.

The North Carolina Business Hall of Fame will induct three outstanding business leaders in the fall of 2007. They are Ed and Charles Shelton and James B. Hunt, Jr. The Sheltons, after successful business careers, opened Shelton Vineyards in Dobson, which is the largest family-owned estate winery in the state. Hunt, the state's only four-term governor, chairs institutes he founded at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and at North Carolina State University.

Some of the oldest and most interesting cemeteries in the state are in the Coastal Plain. Beaufort's Old Burying Ground is over 200-years-old and contains many interesting gravestones. It is rumored that a young girl is buried there in a keg of rum. Many sea captains and sailors are interred there, including Captain Otway Burns, who commanded the Snapdragon during the War of 1812.
