At the turn of the 20th century North Carolina was an attractive destination for many of the nation's elite hunting enthusiasts. The Piedmont area was especially prized for hunting of wild quail. Numerous hunting clubs and lodges were established, beginning in 1894 with the Thomasville Shooting Club.

Raleigh's former Latta University flourished during the period 1892-1930. Rev. Morgan London Latta, who was born into slavery, was founder. The last vestige of the campus was destroyed by fire in 2007. Rev. Latta published his 370 page autobiography in 1903.

"For centuries, the Madison County town has beckoned visitors to bathe in the soothing, warming waters that bubble up from deep within the mountains." Incorporated in 1889, Hot Springs had long been a resort before its founding. In the 1830s, Washington Patton constructed the first grand hotel in the area, featuring a porch with 13 columns , representing the original 13 colonies. It's successor, the Mountain Park Hotel boasted one of the first golf courses in North Carolina.

Bluehead chubs pile up gravel to create nesting grounds. They are typically found in freshwater streams in the mountains and Piedmont.
