Commander Shelly discusses his experiences as a Navy junior (his father retired as a Rear Admiral, USNA Class of 1915), living in Annapolis, Cuba, St. Petersburg, Los Angeles, etc. He comments on his schooling and his experiences as a midshipman at the USNA. For World War II he relates experiences in the USS DRAYTON and the USS MONTPELIER in the South Pacific, flight training in 1943-44, and duty as a PBY pilot from 1944-46. He resigned his commission in 1946 and discusses his business career after leaving the Navy.
2 11244 OH0164 Edward C. Hines, Jr., Oral History Interview January 23, 1998 Commander Hines, a native of Wilmington, N.C., entered the USNA from the US Naval Reserves. He discusses his experiences at the USNA, assignment to the USS COLE, convoy duty in the North Atlantic, invasion of North Africa, and the invasion of Italy at Salerno. Late in 1944 he became executive officer of the USS SUMNER and he comments on the invasion at Leyte Gulf, being hit by a kamikaze in the Philippines, and the end of the war in Tokyo Bay. For the post-war period, he reports on command of the USS KEITH on patrol off Iwo Jima, minesweeping duty along the China coast, and decommissioning of his division. He also discusses various duty stations in the United States, liaison to the Turkish Navy at Ankara, and teaching assignments at the USNA.

Engle Oral History Interview January 23, 1998 Captain Engle comments on his service during and after World War II on the USS SALT LAKE CITY, USS RINEHART, USS ROBERT I PAINE, and USS STORME. Also, he was assigned to the U.S. Fleet Training Center Pearl, Naval Station, Annapolis, OpNav (OP-31), CINCLANTFLT Staff, and the Armed Forces Staff College. His last assignment was as chief of staff for Commander Cruiser Division Three.

William Elliott Oral History Interview January 24, 1998 Captain Elliott comments on his background in South Carolina, his desire to become a naval aviator, and his appointment to the USNA after two years at the Citadel. After graduating from the Naval Academy he was assigned to the USS CASE and he describes experiences during the attack on pearl Harbor, the dropping off of Marines at Midway, the Aleutian campaign, and the collision of the CASE with the USS O'BRIEN. He comments on putting the JOHN ROGERS in commission, duty in the Atlantic, and slight training in 1943. As an aviator he reminiscences about flying the Ryan Fireball, a combination prop and jet plane; his survival of an air crash into the Pacific during training exercises; assignment to work with the Joint Chiefs in Washington, DC; attendance at the Naval War College; duty on the staff of the Atomic Weapons School in Albuquerque, New Mexico; service in Korea at the end of the war; and assignments to the USS INTREPID, CINCPACFLT, the USS NANTAHALA and the command of the SHANGRI-LA. He also reports on duty on the personal staff group of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs during the Vietnam War, including comments on Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara.
