The formation of Grandfather Mountain State Park is a family affair for Jack Morton, who examines the history of the tourist attraction from the purchasing of the acreage in 1885 by his grandfather's great grandfather, and its opening as an attraction in 1952 by his great-great-grandfather.

Hugh MacRae Morton, famed photographer, had an appreciation of the area around Grandfather Mountain perhaps more akin to individuals like John Muir, co-founder of the Sierra Club. As for Morton's grandfather and former owner of Grandfather Mountain, Hugh McRae, his appreciation of the region leaned more toward development than conservation, as demonstrated by his ownership of Linville Improvement Company.

In the past two centuries, Grandfather Mountain has acquired an impressive list of hikers to its summit, beginning in 1794 with Andre Michaux. Other noted are Elisha Mitchell, American botanist Asa Gray, Arnold Guyot and John Mair, father of America's National Parks.
