Abstract:

In the years prior to the American Civil War, the act of creating moonshine whiskey was an important economic activity in the western mountains of North Carolina. It was often more financially profitable for famers to turn their corn or fruit crops into liquor. Temperance movements of the mid-19th century labeled these people as criminals but only marginally affected the distillation and consumption of said liquor.

This article examines the temperance movement of antebellum Rowan County from its early beginnings in the late 18th century, to the height of its power in the 1850s, and subsequent collapse by 1860.

Abstract:

A look at the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) in western North Carolina and their objection the activities of federal revenue agents with regard to taxation of whiskey and the destruction of illegal \"moonshine\" stills. The KKK was able to secure considerable local support on this issue during the late 19th century as they targeted federal government agents at work in the region.
