Stories of police brutality in larger cities, such as New York, do not surprise people. However, when it happens closer to home, many people are concerned. Recently, two cases of brutality were brought against the Durham Police Department. One was settled for $295,000. The other is pending.

She observed how lunch is a critical time of day when children and teenagers are judged by their peers and worry about being cool. Ruley notes that this situation continues into adulthood.

Melinda Ruley, an Independent author, spent eight hours in search of the perfect toy for Christmas. She visited the Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh, K&K Toys, Toys R Us, and the Play House in Durham. From her observations, Melinda concluded that the perfect toy is something that puts children at the center of the universe where they know they belong.

Melinda Ruley, writer for the Independent, wanted to see how writing is being taught in the 1980s. She visited elementary and middle schools in Raleigh, and English courses at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After two weeks of observation, Melinda found that school children used their imaginations to form impressions and describe their world, whereas older adults used experience in writing.

Changes are underway at The News & Observer, Raleigh’s newspaper. Frank Daniels III has been hired as the new editor. Daniels is committed to making the newspaper appeal to a larger, mainstream audience. Readers are concerned that the quality of reporting and the paper's liberal identity are diminishing under Daniels. Additionally, Daniels' lack of experience and the paper's perceived nepotism are being called into question. Daniels' family owns the newspaper at which he was hired to edit.
