Description: Audio recording of a Latino oral history done for an event held at Joyner Library on April 10, 2011. Ms. Chavez describes her childhood in San Agustín Tlaxiaca, Hidalgo, Mexico, as one of ten children. In 1982 she came to Bailey, N.C. and traveled seasonally to Florida to pick oranges. She describes learning English from television captioning. After the birth of her two sons, she went into day care work and became involved with a pre-kindergarten program for Latino families with children transitioning to the public schools. The interview forms part of the Latino Oral History Archive, and was conducted by Drs. Ricardo Contreras (Anthropology, ECU) and David Griffith (Anthropology and Coastal Science and Policy, ECU) with funding from the North Carolina Humanities Council.
