Abstract:
Although Baptists were in New Bern in the 1730s, it was not until 1811 that a church was constructed. In 1848, a larger church was built on Middle Street. Renamed First Baptist Church in 1896, the church marked 150 years in 1988.

In 1893, Caleb Bradham opened a drugstore in New Bern, where he concocted soft drinks. One was called Brad's Drink, and in 1898 it became Pepsi Cola. Although Bradham made millions, fluctuating sugar prices contributed to his bankruptcy in 1923.

Abstract:
The man with a lifelong enthusiasm for flight inspired the naming of a Marine Air Corps station. What is known today familiarly as Cherry Point began its life as Cunningham Field. The WWI veteran, who also fought for marine aviation's establishment, also had this role honored in his induction into the Aviator Hall of Fame in the 1960s. Other honors were a destroyer and two streets in Havelock named for him, as well as burial in the National Cemetery.

The base known familiarly as Cherry Point has followed a longstanding military tradition for North Carolina, with Marines on coastal duty since 1777. Cherry Point’s history included its founding, attributed to the Quantico, Virginia base being deemed inadequate. Also noted in its profile: base name’s source; originally designated location; role in World War II; inclusion of female Marines; and celebrity pilots such as Tyrone Power.
