Founded in 1877 in Elkin, Chatham Manufacturing Company is one of the oldest textile mills in North Carolina. Alan L. Payne became the eighth CEO in the company's history when he was appointed in August 1985. He is only the third CEO who does not bear the founder's, Alexander Chatham's, surname. He later sold the mill, but kept the machinery, moving it to Burlington where it became Burlington Mills. Now Burlington Industries, it is the world's largest textile manufacturing corporation.
