In this continuing series of biographical sketches of members of the state legislature, Lucas discusses John Sprunt Hill, who represented Durham in the State Senate. Hill served ten years on the State Highway Commission and did not seek elective office until 1932, when he was sixty-three years old.

John Sprunt Hill is an initial member of the NORTH CAROLINA magazine Business Hall of Fame. He was a successful banker and philanthropist, having founded, among others, the Durham Bank & Trust Company. He was active in public service and in politics, serving a number of terms in the North Carolina General Assembly and as the first State Highway Commissioner.
