William Henry Belk opened his first department store in Monroe in 1888. Today, there are almost 400 Belk stores in 17 states and Puerto Rico. It is the largest family- and management-owned group of department stores in the nation. The article discusses the growth of the company and its plans for the future.

William Henry Belk opened his first department store in Monroe, North Carolina, in 1888. Offering fixed prices instead of forced haggling, Belk's store flourished. Spreading to South Carolina by 1895, William Henry Belk had officially begun his franchise which would go on to total more than five hundred stores.

Undertaking his first commercial venture in 1888, William Henry Belk turned a dry goods store in Monroe, into the largest and most modern department store chain in the Carolinas.
