North Carolina produced more naval stores than anyone in the world up until well after the Civil War. Naval stores are products manufactured from pine trees, and used in building and maintaining ships. Due to the abundance of tar, pitch, and turpentine, naval stores such as those in Craven County became central to the state’s economy.

In 1865, members of a new congregation in New Bern began constructing a church from slabs brought from James City. The new church, known as Slab Chapel, was later replaced and renamed as Saint John Missionary Baptist Church. Since then, the church has been involved in numerous programs benefiting the community with strong emphasis on mission ministry and outreach.

Taverns, which are also called inns or ordinaries, have historically been thought of as places where people met and drank. The role of taverns was much larger, actually, serving as places of refuge for travelers to New Bern. Taverns have also been centers for business, entertainment, and communication.

The Federation of Woman’s Exchanges was established in 1934 to promote the art of handicrafts and to provide a marketplace for women. The exchanges were formed based on a self-help ideology and women’s volunteerism, and continue to operate today. Saints Creations in New Bern is a member of the Exchange, and offers opportunity to exchange local handmade items.

The Kentucky Tragedy involved the 1825 murder of Colonel Solomon Sharp, one of Kentucky’s most prominent politicians, by Jereboam Beauchamp. Shortly after the murder, Joseph Hutton of New Bern wrote a dramatic play based on the Tragedy. Sharp’s brother claimed he had additional information for the play, and ultimately Hutton’s play was never produced.

The United States District Court was established in New Bern, North Carolina in 1790. Except during the Civil War, federal court has been held in New Bern ever since. Murals and architecture displayed by the Federal Building depict the history and symbolism of New Bern and the United States.

Following the Tuscarora Indian War in 1711-1712, North Carolina realized the need for a money system. During the colonial period, hard currency continued to be scarce until recognition of the Reed Gold Mine in 1799. The state experienced a massive gold rush until the early 1800s, and since then, the exchange system has continued to evolve.

On March 29, 1862, the Reverend William R. G. Mellen, Chaplain of the 24th Massachusetts Regiment stationed in New Bern, wrote a personal letter to a minister friend. Mellen’s letter reflects his dedication to his ministry in time of war, and personal insight into life in New Bern.

The New Bern Garden Club has worked to improve the environment and create beauty in the community and lives of the residents of New Bern. Since 1905, the club has been active in community beautification and gardens, environmentalism, restoration and maintenance of buildings, and education.

The first tour of historic homes in New Bern was held in 1946. Since then, the New Bern Historical Society and the New Bern Preservation Foundation have continued to improve the tour by extending it to magnificent gardens, newly renovated homes and buildings, and unique attractions.

The women talk about childhood and life changes from hurricanes, the depression, and illnesses. Hatteras Yachts is recognized as the world leader in engineering and construction of luxury fiberglass yachts. The company was founded in High Point, North Carolina by Willis Slane, Jr., a textile manufacturer who enjoyed angling and boating. Today Hatteras Yachts has its corporate headquarters and manufacturing site in New Bern.

Furnifold McLendel Simmons lived in New Bern and served as U.S. Senator for North Carolina in 1901-1930. The Liberty Ship Furnifold M. Simmons was named after him. Callie Hollowell had served on the ship and provided an account of this episode.

Found with the papers of the late Dr. Joseph R. Latham, long a leading New Bern physician and surgeon, is what seems to be the only comprehensive and accurate account of the yellow fever epidemic in New Bern during the War Between the States. The written documents offer details of the epidemic which killed more of federal men than battle.
