Abstract:
The First Baptist Missionary Church organized in 1869 as Cedar Grove Baptist Church, then called First Baptist Church, and finally First Baptist Missionary Church in the 1980s, the church had several sites before building on its present one in 1906. It has had strong pastors through the years and a dedicated congregation. Currently the church is in need of renovation, and the members meet in a sister white Baptist church. In 1998, the 1906 building was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Reverend James Reed, also known as Parson Reed, laid the foundation for public education in New Bern and North Carolina over two-hundred years ago. Reed led construction of the first chartered school in North Carolina, which eventually became the New Bern Academy.

Abstract:
In 1865, members of a new congregation in New Bern began constructing a church from slabs brought from James City. The new church, known as Slab Chapel, was later replaced and renamed as Saint John Missionary Baptist Church. Since then, the church has been involved in numerous programs benefiting the community with strong emphasis on mission ministry and outreach.
