Abstract:
Samir Saleh fled civil war in Lebanon and established himself as a leader in Raleigh’s Arab-American community. Saleh opened the restaurant Neomonde, where he planted a pomegranate tree brought from Lebanon. The pomegranate is venerated as a jewel of prosperity in various cultures of the Middle East and Mediterranean.

Kym Register and her band Loamlands has a new record featuring the song Sweet High Rise. Register wrote the song in protest against to the forthcoming high rise development by the Pinhook music club in Durham. Register has become one of the strongest forces standing up for the Durham community.

Mary Lattimore is a harpist from western North Carolina who has collaborated with a variety of musicians on recordings and in live performances. Her recent work is a solo album called At the Dam. The album features music she wrote as she traveled around California and Texas, funded by a 2014 Pew Fellowship grant.

Ryan Kulikowski, the store’s owner, says financial matters were the main cause of its closure. Chapel Hill Comics was open for forty-years and attracted notable authors and comic writers.

The Durham-Orange Light Rail Transit project remains questionable due to funding. Under the current light-rail proposal, the federal government would be responsible for half of the project’s funding. U.S. Representative G.K. Butterfield is optimistic that the project will progress.

Moogfest, a music festival which takes place in Durham for the second time in mid-May, will feature a protest stage. The current volatile political climate made “Protest” an obvious theme choice for 2017. The festival is also working with local activists and social justice groups to give urgency to current issues and social change.

The Barn of Chapel Hill, owned by Kara and Chris Brewer, has been the center of a debate over what should and should not constitute a farm in North Carolina today. The Brewers plan to use their farm as an agritourism site, a way of bringing in revenue to support the farm. The dilemma is that the property would be used as both a commercial business and farm.

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program grants temporary work permits and a deportation reprieve to undocumented immigrants who arrive as minors. Now, under a new presidency, students are pressing the University of North Carolina system to establish itself as a sanctuary campus by refusing to comply with government efforts to deport undocumented students.
