Hahn believes that when students' basic needs are met, they're able to learn better, and with learning comes leadership. Hahn received INDY’s Citizen Award for his efforts toward youth development and making communities healthier.

The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) knew that Duke Energy was polluting the Dan River and did nothing to stop it. The DENR and Duke Energy are now under federal investigation. Observers believe the DENR let the spill go as it is the EPA’s job to enforce clean water regulations, but the agency prevented citizen groups from suing Duke Energy. Some argue that this protected Duke Energy while putting citizens and the environment at risk.

The development of Chatham Park near Pittsboro is now in doubt. A consulting firm agreed with citizen concerns that the project included insufficient open space, unclear development plans, and major problems with infrastructure. Town leaders are expected to allow Preston Development time to review and revise their plans after reviewing the consultants’ report.

The state has partially funded the school voucher program in NC to allow students and parents to choose the schools that are best for them. School vouchers provide $4,200 for low-income students to use to attend private schools they could not afford without the voucher. Opponents argue that this unconstitutional and takes money from public schools. A judge has halted the voucher program and the legality of the program will be decided in the courts.

The forthcoming film Joe, directed by David Gordon Green, has deep roots in North Carolina. North Carolina native and Duke professor Gary Hawkins adapted the screen play for the film and was the teacher of Green at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Hawkins discusses the process of adapting Larry Brown’s novel, working on the film, and working with Green.

The Raleigh arts and music festival Artsplosure is celebrating its 35 anniversary this year. The festival was started as a way to get Raleigh residents to visit the downtown. Now, Artsplosure is struggling to remain relevant with all of the changes to the downtown over the years. Around the time of the festival, there will be at least five other festivals or events in downtown Raleigh. Promoters are looking for ways to attract attendees to keep the festival alive.

Part 1 of a 2-part series on Luke Hampton. Growing up in Sparta, NC, Hampton was a successful high school wrestler known throughout the state. Following Hampton’s injury during a wrestling match, the state athletic association changed the officiating rules for wrestling. Part 1 focuses on Hampton’s childhood, character, wrestling career up to his injury, and his time recovering from his injuries which left him paralyzed. Hampton was known as a strong, generous, young man with a big heart who enjoyed working hard, competing, and helping his neighbors.

The Rhine Research Center in Durham is one of the last institutes in the country devoted to studying parapsychology. Founded by Duke professor Joseph B. Rhine, the center study telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, psychokinesis, the survival of human personalities existing outside a physical form (ghosts or spirts). The center attempts to quantify their research and also includes the Alex Tanous Library. The library has one of the five largest collections in the country of parapsychological and occult literature. In addition to research, the center offers online educational courses and two monthly public workshops, and organizes various groups.

The Reverend William J. Barber is continuing the Moral Monday protests at the state legislature for the short session. Recently, the Legislative Services Commission updated the rules of the General Assembly making it easier to arrest protesters for making noise. Barber and 1,000 protesters responded with a silent protest. Barber has been outspoken against the new rules which he says limit democracy by silencing the people.

Part 2 of a 2-part series on former high school wrestling star Luke Hampton who was paralyzed during a 2011 wrestling match. Part 2 focuses on Hampton’s struggle to live with his 2011 injury. Hampton’s head hit off a wall during a wrestling match in which the mat was placed up against the wall. Hampton’s injury has prompted a change in state officiating, enforcing a rule placing mats 10 feet from any wall.

The Chatham Rabbit is an heirloom dish that making a return to local menus. In the late 1800s to early 1900s, rabbits were a cash crop in Chatham County. Tons were shipped throughout the state and up and down the eastern seaboard. Now, in Oakleaf Restaurant in Pittsboro, NC, Chef Brendan Cox is making Chatham Rabbit with heirloom recipes from the past.
