Numerous threats, such as disease, pests, or fire, have been constant in the daily lives of Pitt County ancestors. There are reports of numerous sicknesses and epidemics over the years. The disease that probably caused the greatest fear was Small Pox. Homeopathic cures and tonics, along with family remedies, have existed for all sorts of ailments, many of which are contained in the East Carolina Manuscript Collection of East Carolina University.

The Greenville Cotton Mills was first conceived of and organized in May 1900 and received their charter in 1913. A $150,000 factory was constructed in 1914 at the intersection of Dickinson Ave. and Hooker Road. The mill was expanded and doubled in capacity in 1920 and provided numerous jobs to locals. After World War II, the mill was idle and was leased to “American Lady, Inc.” making ladies undergarments. In 1950, the Cotton Mill Hill Park was dedicated by Heber B. Tripp. Also in 1950 the factory was leased to a company making synthetic blanket and carpet yarns. In 1960, the factory was bought by Fieldcrest Mills, Inc.

Since 1920, the Tyson-May families have been gathering together as probably the oldest or one of the oldest continuous family reunions held in Pitt County. Reunion founder, Grigg T. Tyson was a farmer who was interested in local history and genealogy. The Tyson-May Reunion has always had distinguished speakers and good food.

Farmville’s story begins in the 1830’s and 40’s when several small communities with stores sprung up in the Farmville area. A post office was established there in 1848, and the area was named Farmville by John H. Hines. According to the Gilmer Civil War map dated 1864. Farmville consisted of a school house and several farms with the first general store being built about 1867. Farmville was incorporated around 1870.

Winslow’s Tavern was named in honor of Jasper.Edgar Winslow, a leading Greenville citizen. Winslow was a native of Quaker Neck, Wayne Co., NC. He settled in Greenville in 1902 and subsequently established a large horse, mule and livestock business. Winslow was active in the community and was a strong advocate for the farmer. Winslow constructed the subject building in 1910 as a horse and mule sales stables. In addition, the building has been home to a car repair business, car dealership, and the Globe Hardware Store.

For many years there have been numerous published and verbal accounts of strange sightings in the Pitt County sky. As early as 1769 objects have been reported to have been seen around Pitt County. Several meteors have fallen throughout the years in Pitt County. As early as 1897 several people have reported seeing strange lights and unidentifiable objects in the sky.
