Raleigh's public square proved a difficult venue for organizations trying to host private ticketed events. The design was such that a fire and safety hazard would be caused if patrons needed to leave the area quickly. Hopscotch was one such festival that was almost cancelled until the city came up with a design solution that utilized surrounding buildings and alleyways as natural barriers for events.

The state is a suitable host for this major bluegrass event considering some of bluegrass' biggest stars came from North Carolina, such as Earl Scruggs and the late Doc Watson. Also notable is that the first president of the International Bluegrass Music Association was Art Menius was a triangle native.

The 65-year-old Rhododendron Festival on Roan Mountain celebrates the Mountain Rosebay or Purple Laurel, also called Rhododendron. The festival started in 1947 when two communities, Roan Mountain, Tennessee, and Bakersville, North Carolina, explored ways to boost the economy through tourism.

The Harnett County city of Dunn was once known as one of the nation’s largest cotton wagon yards. To recognize the impact that cotton and cotton farming has had on the region, Dunn has hosted for thirteen years the North Carolina Cotton Festival in early November. The festival is now known as the Touchstone Energy NC Cotton Festival, sponsored by North Carolina’s electric cooperatives.

The festival includes improvisational comedy, sketch comedy, standup comedy, and film. The festival is attempting to educate comedians and teach them the “business side” of the industry.

The Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival in Chatham County is raising money to buy the land it currently leases. The nonprofit that produces the festival cannot afford the land but does not want to leave. The festival is growing each year and its lease is almost up. The problem is explored and compared with other national festivals who have experienced similar issues.

The gather features four full days of performances, hands-on workshops, interactive software exhibits, and panel discussions with nationally recognized designers, entrepreneurs, artists, and scholars. This group uses, develops, and markets the technology on display at the festival.

“The Theme is Blackness” Festival was recently curated by Duke’s Theater Studies faculty. The event is a way to encourage diversity in theater. The number of minority students who participate in Duke’s Theater programs is approximately 10 percent and the department has not had any black directors of plays over the last 15 years. This year, the festival premiered a play produced by a black director and used a NC Arts Council grant to foster black stage designers. The festivals plays are intended to celebrate blackness and push audiences to consider issues of race.
