Abstract:
ACT UP/Triangle, an AIDS activist group, is challenging a decision by the state to replace anonymous HIV testing with confidential testing, which would require a name for filing. The group feels this would intimidate those who seek testing.

Clay Taliaferro is an artist-in-residence at Duke University, world-class dancer, and choreographer. While Clay has accomplished many successes, he struggles with prejudice against the gay community. This month he is working on a piece for the upcoming AIDS benefit dance concert to bring people together in helping AIDS victims.

Abstract:
Chapel Hill resident David Jones recently testified before the U.S. Congress on the unethical practices in the pharmaceutical industry. Jones recounts stories from his career in the industry on how pharmaceutical companies boost profits through false demand and manipulate the market. These practices harm the consumer. Frustrated, Jones is now a lobbyist and has worked in NC politics on behalf of the consumer helping specifically with anti-discrimination legislation and privacy regulations for AIDS victims.

The Crape Myrtle Festival is celebrating its 30-year anniversary. The festival is one of the nation’s oldest ongoing AIDS fundraisers. The history of the festival and its evolution from a college party to a large fundraiser are detailed.

Gretchen Durham is the winner of a 1993 Independent Weekly Citizen Award. Durham was one of the driving factors behind the creation of a group home for people living with AIDS. Durham is now the administrator at the Nat Blevins House in North Durham and she works nights for the Centers for Disease Control’s National AIDS Hotline. Her motivations and her impact are detailed.
