GeekCraft is an expo for crafters who specialize in geeky, nerdy things like science-fiction, steampunk, comic books, and fantasy. One of its co-founders is Morrisville’s Daniel Way, known for writing comics featuring the Marvel Comics character Dead Pool. GeekCraft Expo will occur in conjunction with Oak City Comicon the weekend of April 16-17.

Raleigh is home to the East Coast Game Conference, one of the largest industry gatherings on the Eastern Seaboard. This year’s keynote speaker is Warren Spector, a game designer and the studio director of OtherSide Entertainment. On April 20, he will be speaking about the industry’s unique combination of art and science that is creating a virtual world players can make their own.

The artistry of great literary works, costume design and movie making comes together in Designed for Drama: Fashion from the Classics, a new exhibition premiering in Biltmore House. Inspired by George Vanderbilt’s love of literature, the exhibition showcases award-winning costumes from films based on favorite books in his collection. Vanderbilt amassed a library of more than twenty-thousand volumes at his North Carolina home.

Students at Mars Hill University’s Liston B. Ramsey Center for Regional Studies created a new exhibit titled, The Fight for Bluff: A Community’s Effort to Preserve Its Mountain. The display examines public outcry following a proposal in 1996 to clear-cut Bluff Mountain, Madison County’s highest peak. The students’ research tracked down documents and photos from activists, and how communities organized to save their mountain from destruction.

BEFORE FREEDOM CAME is an exhibit originating at the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, VA in 1991, depicting African American life in the south before emancipation. Smith critiques a compact traveling version of the exhibit from the Smithsonian for how well it complements the other exhibits at an historic plantation site, the Mordecai House in Raleigh, NC, and for what it lacks with respect to a deeper economic and agricultural context to some of the exhibit pieces.

Discovery Place’s collections manager keeps up with items that help this museum fulfill its mission: to provide STEM related programs, exhibitions, and events for people of all ages. Among the 70,000 plus items are 3,800 year old Mayan figurines and a male passenger pigeon collected in New York in 1884.
